Successful product development is linked with accurate interpretation of the progressive changes in demand and on the trends in technology that may influence those changes. Selection of materials is an integral part of the design process and influenced by considerations of cost and performance. The manufacturers and suppliers of materials therefore need close contact with design engineers to understand the performance requirements for components or finished products under development, and to advise on the way in which they are best met in manufacture and in service. Examples of market trends providing opportunities for development of copper-based products are given.
