Abstract
The authors describe the development of a new type of wear test designed to enable the comparative performance of die and tool materials to be evaluated under service conditions encountered in a hot-working process. The wear test is being applied to new types of die steel containing coarse carbide dispersions, and to orthodox hot-work steels for comparison. Initial test results using laboratory forging trials and pin-on-ring machines are described. The results are discussed critically, as are the tool/workpiece interface conditions which, together, suggested the need for a new test. The development of this test and some initial results are presented.
