Abstract
Nucor Steel has maximized the latent heat of the bar billets coming from the caster by designing, constructing, and operating a rolling-mill facility that has linked the caster to the mill by passing the billets through four induction coils that heat the billet to rolling temperature. Nucor's in-line facility has successfully and profitably produced 245 000 short tons of steel product in the past 19 months. The plants at Norfolk, Neb., USA, are described with emphasis on the original induction equipment, together with changes made thereto. In conclusion the author comments on the positive and negative aspects of Nucor's experience which, on balance, has been very good.
