Abstract
Users of rod and bar products, particularly the automobile industry, are making increasingly severe demands on the manufacturers for higher-quality materials. Manufacturers have responded by improving production technology and specializing. Kobe Steet Ltd, which has a long tradition ofproducing high-quality rod and bar, has been aware of this situation and has modernized its production processes. The aim has been improve the quality of the material at the input stage rather than at the billet or final-product stages. The authors describe the background to the modernization of the Kobe Works.
