An electronic switch circuit is described for a capacitor spark-discharge hardening process which permits hard coatings to be deposited on suitable substrates at coverage rates of up to 9cm2 min−1, about an order of magnitude higher than by conventional mechanical switching means. The process was evaluated in a hot-forging die-life programme, where it was found that the life of extrusion pinion dies could be increased significantly (> 10%) by the coating process.
