Abstract
In this paper the authors review current methods of forging billet production within the Special Steels Division of the British Steel Corporation. Indications are given of the many changes that have occurred in recent years in process routes from the casting of the liquid steel through to final inspection, rectification, and despatch. The need for rigorous control over all aspects of the production process is emphasized, as is the need for a close liaison with the customer. The latter relationship is vital if total low through-cost process routes are to be achieved to the mutual benefit of both parties. Many new developments in inspection techniques are currently taking place: some are already installed and others will be brought on stream in the next few years, all with the aim of producing a more consistent, high-integrity product.
