Invalid fracture toughness data have been analysed using a semi-empirical fracture formula, which has been applied to invalid bend and compact tension specimens made of various steels, and thin centre-cracked panels made of aluminium alloys. Reasonable estimates of the toughnesses were obtained in the majority of the analyses, although the calculated toughnesses for grossly invalid specimens tended to be low.
