Abstract
The influence of inclusion size on the deformation behaviour of Type III MnS inclusions in an experimental steel during hot rolling has been investigated using an image analysing computer. It has been shown that the deformation of inclusions of less than 5μm dia. is size dependent, with smaller inclusions being less deformed. Totally undeformed inclusions can be observed, but it has not been possible to determine or predict precisely the size below which inclusion deformation will not occur with normally encountered conditions of mechanical working. The relationship between the size effect and the inclusion/matrix interfacial energy is discussed. In view of the importance of the statistical method used in the analysis in relation to the results obtained, the techniques of quantitative metallography employed are outlined in an appendix.
