Abstract
Steel is the most widely usedform of metal, and as such is generally produced and finished on a mass-production basis. The quality of feed material and the degree of inspection given during the process and at thefinal stage are dependent on the end use of the steel product. It is essential to ensure that the maximum financial return is obtained from a rolling mill with optimum customer satisfaction. Mill developments are such that reliance on human techniquesfor running the plant is being superseded by calculated set methods. This is not to say that the mills of the future will be totally controlled by computers, but some of the mysticism attached to rerolling will be dispelled.
