Abstract
Close collaboration between steel maker and user is essential if inspection standards are to be designed that will permit economical supply of steel to meet the requirements of the engineering industries. The drop-forging industry has been selected, since the experience of the author is thus limited, as an example of a user industry that would benefit greatly from an immediate translation of best practice throughout the steelmaking industry. Users of wrought steel are under mounting pressures to manufacture parts to high quality standards; an example is the advent of safety critical components in the automotive industry. Full implementation of advanced techniques to resist the challenge of those forming processes not requiring wrought steel is dependent on steel manufacture of improved quality. Present problems encountered with drop-forging steel are outlined. Some solutions are suggested and future trends predicted.
