Abstract
A description is given of the development over the periodfrom 1948 to 1964 of the billet inspection facilities at the Brymbo Works of the Special Steels Division of the British Steel Corporation and the efforts continuously to improve the system. The development includes the pioneering design and installation of four face grinding machines, which are used to explore the billet surfaces and to show up billet surface defects. The mode of operation of the grinding heads and the incorporation of these machines into billet inspection lines is described. The development from the preferred method of hand swing frame grinders for billet rectification by the use of a mechanical spot grinder is mentioned. The applicability of this form of billet inspection to the surface quality and application of a product for direct forging from billet pieces for the manufacture of automobile components is illustrated by performance data.
