Abstract
The system of functional maintenance with planned inspection and lubrication, planned working methods, consistent costing, and determination and eradication of weak points is discussed. It can be represented in the form of a cyclic model. A clear estimate of costs is the prerequisite of operational order. The changing relationship between maintenance and breakdown costs brings about an adjustment in risk. Staff costs above all appear to be fixed. Practical possibilities of making them flexible are shown. The spare parts policy is very closely linked with the risk concept. The old quality concept for evaluating our plants is no longer adequate. It must be extended by the concept of reliability. By bringing in the plant manufacturer, this model must be developed into an expanded system. Planning, design, assembly, manufacture and maintenance must be integrated to form the basis of a new technical thinking which is covered by the concept of terotechnology.
