A new X-ray method for determining the amount of retained austenite in strongly textured steels is described. The method relates the amount of austenite present to the intensities of three low-order reflections, which are well separated from other lines and can be measured easily with good accuracy. It is shown that the method gives good results when applied to a textured Fe–Ni–C alloy, and it is considerably simpler than other published techniques.
