Abstract
After briefly reviewing the properties of elastic waves in elastic continua and in crystals, the authors consider the use of various standard acoustic emission parameters, such as ringdown counting, event counting, and amplitude analysis, in the characterization of flow and fracture processes. In addition, the use and limitations of frequency analysis are described. The fracture nodes treated mainly are cleavage cracking in mild steel and prestrained structural steel and ‘fast shear’ in high-strength structural steels.
