In order to reduce the susceptibility of Type 316 weld metal to solidification cracking during welding, the composition is usually chosen to produce about 5% δ-ferrite in the aswelded condition. However, substantial variations in δ-ferrite content and morphology can be observed across a multipass weld. Such variations correspond with the weld bead distribution and are especially pronounced across the interpass boundaries.
