Abstract
The recrystallization method, a newly developed technique for measuring plastic strain, makes it possible to observe directly the intense strain region near the crack tip. The shape of this zone and the plastic strain distribution obtained by this method are similar to the theoretical findings of Rice and Johnson. It is also confirmed that progressive crack-tip blunting under large-scale yielding, i.e. COD, is closely related to the extension of these regions of intense strain near the crack tip.
