In special solidification conditions, eutectic niobium carbonitride is formed in mild steel containing niobium (Fig. 1). The presence of a similar carbonitride at grain boundaries in steel castings was reported by Hannaerz, Lindborg and Lehtinen. They suggested that the carbonitride was formed by precipitation from austenite below 1400° C. In the present work the distribution and the size of carbonitride particles showed clearly their eutectic origin.
