Abstract
This study is part of a programme to determine the diffusion behaviour of the principal constituents of Type 316 stainless steel. Chromium diffusion plays an important role in the oxidation behaviour of stainless steels and both lattice and grain-boundary diffusion rates have been measured. Lattice diffusion in the temperature range 1023–1473 K is described by R being in J/mol K.
Grain-boundary diffusion in the temperature range 923–1273 K is given by δ being the grain-boundary width. Effects of dislocation pipe diffusion were observed near the surface below 973 K and also at deep penetrations above this temperature.
