Abstract
In 1973, the University of Montreal became 100 years old and as part of the centenary celebrations a summer school on grain boundaries was arranged by Professor J. P. Baillon and Professor J. F. Daniel. The attendance was limited to between 60 and 70 but most of the leading laboratories were represented, and as only 40 papers were presented during five days there was time to formulate a general view of the present state of thinking and experimentation concerning grain boundaries. Such a view is described here.
