Abstract
The various methods of measuring grain-boundary sliding are reviewed, critical attention being given to consideration of their rigour and practicability; they include surface and interior marker lines, surface steps, and the analysis of change in grain shape. A new suggestion is put forward to explain differences between estimates of the contribution of sliding to the overall extension made from measurements on the surface and in the interior.
