Abstract
Lucci and Antonione recently reported the results of a series of internal-friction nleasurements on cold-worked and annealed iron alloys. The data nicely demonstrate the expected increase in background damping with increasing cold work and the expected decrease with subsequent recovery. However, in their analysis of the data the authors have failed to consider the fact that the recovery process is a markedly time-dependent phenomenon, the extent of which cannot necessarily be simply related to the highest temperature to which the material has been exposed. Consequently, virtually all the data analysis presented in the paper is subject to the most severe criticism.
