A metallographic investigation has been carried out on austenitic stainless-steel specimens after creep deformation both in air and in vacuum. Specimens tested in air were more prone to cavitation, and had shorter secondary creep periods and higher minimum creep rates than those tested in vacuum under the same conditions of temperature and load. These observations are discussed in terms of current theories of cavitation growth.
