The existence of a critical temperature for self-nucleation of homogeneous precipitation, similar to that found in aluminium alloys, has been established for the precipitation of M23C6 in 18Cr-9Ni-4Mn austenitic stainless steels. It is demonstrated that this temperature increases as the phosphorus content of the steel is raised. Various models that might account for this increase are briefly discussed.
