Abstract
The implementation of new process routes involving accelerated cooling directly following rolling is allowing steelmakers to react rapidly to market demands. Advances achieved in the heavy plate mill of Dillinger Hüttenwerke are reported, where enhanced cooling technology coupled with improved process control have permitted remarkable material property combinations (high strength and excellent toughness combined with low carbon equivalent) to be obtained. Combining this facility with high precision position control has led to the development of a sophisticated trial tool (the ATP process) that allows final cooling parameters to be optimised cost effectively. Case studies involving the industrial application of this technology are presented.
