Professor Tom Bell dedicated himself to the establishment of the discipline of surface engineering and contributed greatly to the development of surface engineering in China. This paper briefly overviews the four important stages in the development of surface engineering in China, i.e. single surface engineering, duplex surface engineering, nanosurface engineering and automation.
