Abstract
There is an increasing convergence of Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering in the modern industrial world, with both being considered promising options for enhancing durability and performance of engineering components. It is now a global trend for the two communities to professionally come together under a single umbrella. Consistent with this philosophy, an International Conference on ‘Advances in surface treatment: research and applications’ (ASTRA-2003) was organised by the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), an autonomous research and development unit of the Government of India's Department of Science and Technology, in the South Indian city of Hyderabad, 3–6 November 2003.
