Laser hardening (LH) of gears is a modern technique, which is different to induction hardening or carbon case hardening. The present paper investigates the key parameters for the laser hardening of gears. Based on these parameters, a uniform laser hardened case is easily obtained. Metrological results show that the distortion of the laser hardened gears is too small to influence the gear accuracy class.
