Mechanical characterisation of interface in laser surface engineered composite TiB 2 coating on steel

Abstract

The four point bend test was carried out on a laser surface engineered composite TiB₂ coating on AISI 1010 steel to evaluate the interfacial strength of the coating. The strain energy release rate G_ss and thestress intensity factor K_c were computed for this particular coating–substrate system. The critical fracture energy release rate G_c and the stress intensity factor of the interface produced in laser surface engineered TiB₂ coating/1010 steel substrate were found to be 299 J m^-2 and 10·2 MPa m^1/2, respectively. Such an energy release rate is indicative of a strong coating/substrate interface. There was no delamination of the coating at the interface. Cracks propagated through the entire thickness of the coating and were blunted by the localised plastic deformation after reaching the steel substrate.
