An overview is provided of research on coupled hardsoft magnetic multilayers as model exchange-spring systems, with an emphasis on uncovering the fundamental magnetic reversal processes and the correlation between microstructure and magnetic properties. The goal is to illustrate the rich opportunities to understand and hopefully improve permanent magnets by utilising the principles of nanotechnology and the microscopic tools of the modern materials science.
