Abstract
When bronze is immersed in a solution of the corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA), surface adsorption occurs and the film formed enhances the resistance to oxidation in air at temperatures up to 550°C. The most important factor in the dipping treatment to produce enhanced protection is the concentration of BTA in the solution, followed by the temperature and then the time of immersion. Aqueous solutions of BTA are more effective than those based on methanol. The composition of the oxide film is also affected by the BTA treatment. This treatment also improves the corrosion resistance of bronze in deionised water, but there is only a small effect in sodium chloride solution.
