Abstract
Study has been carried out of the chloride pitting resistance of weld metal for 22Cr–5Ni–3Mo–0·15N duplex stainless steel. Manual metal arc weld pads were produced withconsumables giving a range of deposit composition, pitting behaviour being assessed potentiodynamically in sodium chloride solutions saturated with carbon dioxide and by immersion in 10%FeCl3. 6H2O. Pitting resistance was improved for higher chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen contents, but reduced by increasing nickel level. The relative effects of these elements depended on the pitting criteria utilised. Weld metal pitting behaviour was not strongly influenced by ferrite/austenite balance, although reheated regions with secondary austenite were sensitive to preferential attack, nor by electrode flux system and resultant inclusion population. The results indicate that consumables for duplex stainless steel should be designed to deposit weld metal that is slightly more highly alloyed than the parent material.
