The structure of hot dipped galvanised coatings on steel and the nature of atmospheric corrosion processes are briefly described. A mechanism for the brown staining of galvanised components in conditions of atmospheric corrosion is put forward based on the presence of free iron in the coating. Sources of the free iron are discussed and the occurrence of the phenomenon in real structures is illustrated.
