Abstract
Electrochemical impedance measurements have been made in 0·034M NaCl on coated steel with various organic coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has made it possible to monitor the penetration of the surrounding electrolyte into the paint and determine the extent of paint breakdown. Based on impedance and corrosion potential measurements as a function of time, the different paints have been ranked in terms of the effectiveness of their anticorrosive properties in chloride containing solutions. A comparison of visual observations, impedance, and corrosion potential data indicates that the electrochemical impedance technique is a very powerful tool for the study of the metal/organic coating interface.
