Abstract
An assessment has been made of the application of the photogrid method to the study of the strain distribution around a propagating stress corrosion crack in an Al–Zn–Mg alloy immersed in aqueous 3·5% sodium chloride. Under the conditions of the investigation it was possible to evaluate the macrostrains, but the technique will need considerable refinement to be rendered suitable for the study of the crack tip plastic zone dimensions and deformation. The macrostrains demonstrated a characteristic lobed appearance, as predicted by theory.
