Abstract
The effect of sodium nitrite on the fatigue behaviour of α-brass has been examined using the reverse bending technique. The results indicate that, although the corrosion resistance of α-brass in 1 M nitrite solution is high, yet severe corrosion fatigue (CF) occurs. The fatigue life in air is about 5 times that in nitrite solution under free corrosion conditions. Metallographic examination indicates that an interaction between CF and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is most probably occurring. It is suggested that CF in nitrite is initiated by SCC and is explained by the conjoint film rupture and adsorption models.
