Abstract
Published literature on the aqueous corrosion of silver-brazed joints is reviewed. The tensile strength under these conditions decreases progressively with time. Failure takes place as a result of attack on the stainless steel and the brazing alloy is usually (but not always) the cathodic site. The mechanism is not fully understood but involves creviceformation at the steel-braze interface, the growth of this crevice leading to failure. Mechanism must be related to the metallurgy of the interface and the crucial question, which appears to be unresolved, is the extent to which the two metals react, forming intermetallic compounds in the region of the interface. Comments in the literature regarding this point are in conflict.
