Abstract
An analytical solution for the evaluation of the time-dependent distribution of the oxygen concentration along the length and across the width of a parallel-sided crevice or crack in a metal in aqueous solution has been obtained. The solution is of general application and examples of its use are demonstrated for the case of steel in chloride solutions. The extent of the validity of the one-dimensional averaging method usedfor more complicated crack electrochemistry models has been demonstrated. The steady-state one-dimensional solution for the oxygen concentration in a tapered crack has been obtained. An approximate evaluation of the oxygen concentration in a corrosionfatigue crack based on a perfect mixing model has been made for a range of frequencies and ∆K values.
