Abstract
A study was made of the influence of various industrial/environmental contaminants upon the morphology of the oxide forming in crevices between mild steel components exposed for up to 1000 h to high pressure CO2-based atmospheres at 673–823 K. First results showed that two chlorine containing contaminants, artificial sea water and a cutting fluid, encouraged early breakdown of the protective oxide film and initiated breakaway attack.
