Abstract
Weight loss trials, potential'time, and potentiostatic polarisation curves have been used to study the inhibitive properties of zinc gluconate (ZnGl) towards the corrosion of mild steel in sea water. ZnGl completely protects mild steel in stagnant sea water at concentrations ≥ 1 × 10−3 mol/l; at concentrations between 5 × 10−4 mol/l and 1 × 10−3 mol/llocalised corrosion occurs, with general corrosion at ≤ 5 × 10−4 mol/l. From a mechanistic point of view ZnGl behaves basically as a cathodic type inhibitor.
