The pitting potential of mild steel and pure iron in alkaline solutions has been shown to beco me more noble as the surface roughness is reduced. It is suggested that this is a result, not of changes in defects of oxide films, but of the lower activation energy for metal ions to pass into solution from the roughened surfaces.
