Abstract
The corrosion behaviour of Al and some Al-Si and Al-Zn alloys in solutions of 0·5 M NaCl at pH 2 and pH 6 has been studied. It was found possible to determine a potential value, ER, which correlates directly with the onset of pitting corrosion of the metal.
This potential, ER, has the advantage of being simply and easily determined, with good reproducibility. It is independent of the cell geometry and of the condition of the surface of the specimen, but is closely correlated with the composition and structure of the metallic material and with the composition and temperature of the solution.
