Abstract
The area of steel exposed at pores in the coating of tinplate has been estimated by three methods to be of the order of one thousandth of the total surface area for coatings of22 g/m2. The number of pores counted was in the range 300–2,500 percm2. The rate of dissolution of tin from the tinplates increases above the rate for pure tin directly in relation to the exposed steel area. The steel area is conveniently estimated from the current/potential relationship during anodic polarisation in ammonium thiocyanate solution with potential displacements limited to 5 mV.
