Abstract
The characteristics of potentiostats are briefly summarised and the requirements for various applications are indicated. The uses and limitations of potentiostatic techniques in corrosion studies are then reviewed. Techniques discussed are: the determination and use of polarisation data; the direct determination of corrosion rate by measurement of ‘polarisation resistance’; chronoamperometric examination of film growth and breakdown; and the extraction of metallographic phases.
