Factors influencing immersion heater element corrosion are investigated. It is shown that elements can continue heating water for considerable times after the insulation has become wet due to water penetration following corrosion. New corrosion palliatives are suggested—particularly cathodic protection and the electrical insulation of the element sheath from the boss and the tank.
