Abstract
Mr. R. A. Parkes (Metallisation Ltd.): Dr. Everett and Mr. Tarleton have drawn attention to the danger of severe corrosion in crevices, and it is therefore surprising that the British Standard Code of Practice CP.2008 requires the contact surfaces of friction grip bolted joints to be free of any protective coating. It is possible to inject two or three pints of water into an average joint of this type, so that severe internal corrosion must be expected. The Code of Practice suggests that ingress of water can be prevented by painting the edges and corners, but this is not a positive remedy.
