Abstract
So far as mechanical considerations are concerned, there are many instances where fastened joints can give satisfactory service for some years even if no protective measures are taken. Such examples are in constant evidence in our daily lives. This visual evidencedoes indeed lead us immediately to one reason for taking protective measures, namely to improve appearance and avoid the unsightly results of corrosion.
Of more concern to the technologist, however, is the maintenance of security of fastenedjoints during long periods of service under adverse conditions varying from relatively mild atmospheric conditions to extremely severe environments in parts of chemical plant.
