Abstract
This article is an overview of the development and implementation of technology-mediated distance education in special education at West Virginia University. The authors describe how the program changed to take advantage of emerging technologies during the past two decades, discuss the actual and potential impact of distance education on rural schools and communities, and offer suggestions for instructors and learners who are considering whether to become involved in technology-mediated distance education.
