Abstract
Crellin Elementary, a rural school in the mountains of Western Maryland faces a variety of literacy needs. With a large percentage of struggling readers, the decision was made to investigate remedial strategies and create a program grounded in research. Read and Comprehend Everyday (RACE), modeled after Marie Clay's Reading Recovery (1993), incorporates the basic tenets in a modified context. Using well-crafted lessons during one-on-one tutoring sessions, students are making accelerated progress in the acquisition of literacy skills. Although the Reading Recovery program is designed for first graders, RACE was adapted to meet the needs of intermediate students as well.
