Abstract
A review of literature was conducted to identify challenges faced by rural families with young children who have disabilities as well as those of early intervention professionals who live and work in rural programs. A focus group discussion and an open-ended questionnaire were then used to identify challenges faced by families and professionals in rural East Texas. Families identified challenges related to basic needs such as transportation, housing, and access to medical care, as well as feelings of isolation and the need for social and emotional support. Professionals identified many challenges but were most concerned about the lack of accessible resources available to meet the needs of families. Lack of training was another significant problem for professionals who work in rural areas.
