Abstract
The medicolegal crisis continues to rise at epidemic proportions. What once was a physician-oriented problem has become a problem for all health professionals. The role of the sonographer is unique in that his or her ability plays a critical role in the ability of the physician to make a diagnosis. Sonography has become widely accepted among physicians, and its portability and cost-effectiveness enable us to leave the hospital setting to provide services to clinics, private offices, and mobile operations. The increase in the use of diagnostic ultrasound imaging coupled with media exposure inevitably has caught the eyes of the legal world. Research into this subject is giving us insight into primary problem areas and helping us to understand the importance of the roles of the sonologist and sonographer and their responsibility to work as a team. This article concentrates on sonographer-related cases and discusses ways to minimize the risks of litigation.
